Jerzy Skolimowski
Jerzy Skolimowski (born May 5, 1938 in Łódź ) is a Polish film director and actor .
Life
Skolimowski's family moved from Łódź to Warsaw after he was born . His father was active in the Polish resistance during the Second World War and was murdered by the National Socialists. In the 1950s he studied ethnology , literature and history in Warsaw . He graduated in 1959 and went to his hometown to study directing at the Łódź Film School . The jazz fan was already in contact with musicians like Krzysztof Komeda in Warsaw , who brought him together with Roman Polański . As a student, he wrote scripts that were realized by Polański and Andrzej Wajda . In 1960 the film The Innocent Wizards of Wajda was made based on a novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski and in 1962 The Knife in the Water by Polański. He wrote the dialogues for The Knife in the Water .
In 1966 he directed the feature film Bariera , which brought him international attention and he was given the opportunity to make the film Le Départ in Belgium . He wrote the script together with Andrzej Kostenko . Jean-Pierre Léaud played the leading role in this swinging, romantic comedy that was so typical of the 1960s . At the Berlinale 1967 he received the Golden Bear for this film . In the same year he made his last Polish film, Hands Up! which, however, was banned by the censors and only premiered in 1981. The film's strong criticism of Stalinism meant that Skolimowski was practically expelled from the communist regime in Poland.
He then made his films in France , the USA and the Federal Republic of Germany . His first English-language film, which he filmed with his own script, was the drama Deep End , which was then seen as a scandalous film and which earned him hymns of praise from many international film critics. With his following films Skolimowski could only partially build on this. His film Das Feuerschiff (1985), based on a novel by Siegfried Lenz , won several prizes at the Venice Film Festival, but it was a failure at the box office.
In addition to his film work as a director, screenwriter and actor, Skolimowski also works as a painter. Today he lives in Masuria . In 2016 he was honored with the Golden Lion in Venice for his life's work.
