The film tells the true story of Victoria Thompson, who lived in New Zealand in the 19th century . Victoria, an orphan , marries wealthy Oliver Thompson at the age of 18. The husband later turns out to be despotic and stingy.

Victoria then falls in love with George, Oliver's brother. She wants to dare a new beginning with him, but the plans fail.

Victoria poisons Oliver, who dies very slowly. She is convicted and sentenced, and her case is known nationwide.
