Georges Delerue (born March 12, 1925 in Roubaix , † March 20, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was a French composer . Among other things, he created the film music for more than 300 feature films.

Career

Delerue studied at the Conservatory of Paris under the guidance of Darius Milhaud . In 1949 he was awarded the Prix ​​de Rome . In 1952 he was appointed composer and head of the French radio orchestra. At the end of the 1950s, Delerue increasingly devoted himself to composing film music. During his work he covered a wide range of film genres. At the beginning of his career he worked closely with François Truffaut ( The Sweet Skin , The American Night ) , but other directors of the French Nouvelle Vague also sought collaboration with him, such as Jean-Luc Godard for his film The Contempt , Alain Resnais , Louis Malle and Bernardo Bertolucci .

The success of the directors gave Delerue his own international breakthrough, and in 1969 the composer received his first Oscar nomination for the score for Charles Jarrott's historical drama Queen for a Thousand Days . In 1972 he began working on various Hollywood productions. In 1983, the film Silkwood was directed by Mike Nichols . In 1986 Delerue conducted the piece Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber for Oliver Stones Platoon and in 1991 composed the score for the film Black Robe . In 1980, Delerue won the Oscar for best music for his music for George Roy Hill's film I Love You - I Love You - Je t'aime . He was nominated for an Oscar another four times. From 1979 to 1981 he won the French César film award three times in a row . Delerue has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award twice during his career .

Delerue's main work was film music, but was not limited to this. In addition, he also composed orchestral works and chamber music for the concert hall as well as stage works, e.g. E.g. the operas Ariane (1954), Le chevalier de neige (1961), Medis et Alysio (1974) and the music for the ballet La Leçon by Flemming Flindt (1963). Georges Delerue died on March 20, 1992 in Los Angeles eight days after his 67th birthday.
