The panther is chased is a feature film by the French director Claude Sautet , which is set in an underworld. It is based on the crime novel Das Ende vor Augen (original title: Classe tous risques - also the French film title) by José Giovanni from 1960.

action

The film tells the story of the aging gangster Abel Davos, who is forced to flee from Italy to France with his wife, two sons and an accomplice. His wife and accomplice are killed in a shootout with the French police. He turns to his former friends from the Parisian milieu to organize his escape to Paris, but they do not dare to take cover and send a young henchman. This one, Eric Stark, takes on the risky job without hesitation and becomes Abel's friend. He helps him to keep his children safe and to hide in Paris. While Abel, with the help of Eric, organizes his hiding, he is betrayed by his former friends. He begins a deadly campaign of revenge.

useful information

The film was shot in Milan , Nice and Paris from October to December 1959 and recorded around 1.7 million admissions in France in the year of its release. The church to which Abel goes with his two sons after losing their mother is the Sainte Réparate cathedral in the old town of Nice.

criticism

  • film-dienst : An atmospherically dense and dramatically convincing underworld drama.
  • Evangelical film observer (review No. 334/1960): Escape and end of a violent criminal. Although an ice-cold murderer, the eponymous hero bears so many traits of good humanity that there can be no more talk of the film's good intentions. We reject this confusing strip.
  • AO Scott of The New York Times wrote in 2005: "Claude Sautet's Classe Tous Risques is the kind of French film that creates the need to throw on a trench coat, light a cigarette, and shoot someone. The film is a touching work that keeps the subject Treat honor and friendship among thieves.
