Anthony Oliver Scott (born July 10, 1966 in Northampton , Massachusetts ) is an American film critic and journalist . He is currently, together with Manohla Dargis , chief film critic for the New York Times .

Life

Anthony Oliver Scott was born to two historians. His mother, Joan Wallach Scott, is a history professor at the Institute for Advanced Study and his father, Donald Scott, is a history professor at the City University of New York . He is also a great-nephew of the actor Eli Wallach . Scott attended several private schools in Providence , including Classical High School , before graduating from Harvard University with Magna Cum Laude in literary studies .

Scott then began his career at the New York Review of Books as an assistant to literary critic Robert B. Silvers . In addition, he wrote for Slate magazine and for Newsday reviews. After Janet Maslin gave up the post of chief film critic at the New York Times in late 1999, he moved there in January 2000. When her successor Elvis Mitchell gave up his post in 2004, he took it over, together with Manohla Dargis.
