The City University of New York , shortly CUNY , the University network of state universities in New York City . Like the State University of New York and California State University , CUNY is a large state university system in the United States .

The history of the CUNY goes back to the founding of the Free Academy of the City of New York , later City College of New York , in 1847. After the founding of the CUNY, the city still shared the costs in equal measure with the state of New York , but CUNY is now largely funded by New York State.
