The Lehman College is one of those already in the founding of the City University of New York , US existing colleges . In 1931 it was founded as the Bronx Campus of Hunter College and in 1968 it became independent within City University. The college was named after the patron Herbert H. Lehman , a former New York governor and senator of the United States. Lehman College is a state, coeducational liberal arts college with more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

history

Hunter College was built in the Bronx in the late 1930s and the complex would later form the college's Bronx campus. During World War II , Hunter College rented the Bronx Campus complex to the United States Navy , which trained more than 95,000 female volunteers in these buildings for military use as WAVES in the Navy and SPARS in the Coast Guard. After the Navy had cleared the area, it was briefly used by the newly founded United Nations , which held the first meetings of the Security Council there in 1946 .

campus

The campus is located near the protected Jerome Park Reservoir at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West (250 West 200th Street). The entire campus area is around 15 hectares, the architectural style of the buildings is, on the one hand, neo-Gothic architecture , and on the other, modern architecture . During the Second World War it was the most important training facility for women in the military and in 1946 it was the provisional headquarters of the newly founded United Nations for six months. In the mid-1990s, a sports hall was built in a postmodern style , which stands out compared to the neoclassical buildings that dominate the site. There is also a theater on the premises with The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts .
