Two SPARS, 1942/45

SPARS was the nickname of the US Coast Guard women service members .

The United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve was founded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on November 23, 1942 with the Public Law 773 , due to the entry of the United States into World War II . First head was Lieutenant Captain (later Sea Captain ) Dorothy Stratton .

SPARS is an acronym for the coast guard's motto semper paratus - always ready .

The Coast Guard named two of their cutters after the SPARS, namely the USCGC Spar (WLB-403) and the USCGC Spar (WLB-206).
