At the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) , students are trained in master's and doctoral programs as well as research and public events. Its headquarters in Midtown Manhattan have 4,600 students, 33 doctoral programs, 7 master’s programs and 30 separate research institutes. The research institutes deal with social, public, cultural and scientific topics. The teaching staff at the Graduate Center ( core faculty ) consists of around 150 professorships, plus a further 1,800 professors from the eleven senior colleges at City University.

Since 1965, more than ten thousand students have completed their doctorates at the Graduate Center.

Since 1999 the Graduate Center has been located in a nine-story building at 365 Fifth Avenue, formerly the headquarters of the B. Altman department store.
