Midtown Manhattan (or simply Midtown ) is an inexact geographical designation for the horizontal middle part of the New York City district ( borough ) Manhattan . Midtown is bordered by Uptown to the north and Downtown to the south . The western border is the Hudson River , the eastern the East River .

The exact positions of the three names Uptown, Midtown and Downtown for Manhattan are not precisely defined. For most New Yorkers, Midtown Manhattan borders the Upper West Side , Upper East Side and Central Park in the north , so it ends on 59th Street .
