The 59th Street crosses from west to east of New York City borough Manhattan . It is also the border between Midtown Manhattan in the south and Upper Manhattan in the north.

Location and course

59th Street runs from York Avenue or Sutton Place to the West Side Highway with a break between Ninth Avenue / Columbus Avenue and Eighth Avenue / Central Park West because of the Time Warner Center .

On the south side of Central Park , traffic runs in both directions. On this section, 59th Street is called Central Park South . The part between Ninth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue / West End Avenue is a one-way street (going west). The part between Fifth Avenue and Second Avenue is also a one-way street (eastbound).

On Second Avenue, 59th Street branches off onto Queensboro Bridge , which is often referred to as the 59th Street Bridge , although 59th Street then continues eastwards - to York Avenue / Sutton Place.

The avenues west of Central Park are no longer numbered north of 59th Street, but have different names there. So 8th Avenue is called Central Park West , 9th Avenue becomes Columbus Avenue , 10th Avenue becomes Amsterdam Avenue and 11th Avenue becomes West End Avenue .
