Administrative divisions of New York City

The Seal of New York City

The administrative structure of New York City is on two levels:

  • The city of New York is divided into five boroughs ("boroughs") that correspond to counties ("counties") of the state of New York .
  • The boroughs, in turn, are divided into a total of 59 Community Districts (CD), the roles of which are defined in Chapter 69 of the City of New York Charter.

The community districts , however, hardly perform any administrative tasks in the narrower sense, but mainly serve to improve the voice of the citizens. Each Community District has a community board with up to 50 members, the residents of the respective Community District must be s and pro rata from the Borough President of the respective boroughs and the local representatives in the City Council ( City Council ) are appointed. The community boards serve as the first point of contact for citizen complaints and have a say in planning projects.

The boundaries of the community districts are overlaid by the areas of responsibility of other municipal authorities, such as B. the districts ( Precincts ) of the fire brigade and police, and the school districts ( School districts ) which only partially coincide with the boundaries of the Community Districts .

The Community Districts in turn consist of different neighborhoods , which is why New York has also found its way into literature as the City of Neighborhoods . The neighborhoods , however, are not fixed administrative units, but names that have emerged for individual districts over the course of time. Many of these neighborhoods go back to historical locations such as For example, today's Bushwick on Boswijck, founded in 1661 by Dutch settlers. Others go back to real estate speculators who were significantly involved in the development of the respective district; For example, Brownsville is named after Charles S. Brown, who bought the area and built 250 houses there after 1865. Still other names go back to historical immigrant groups, such as B. Little Italy and Chinatown and some newer names are inventions of the real estate industry to better market an area, such as NoHo (North of Houston Street) or Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Neighborhoods are often characterized by a certain, relatively uniform architectural style or a certain ethnic composition. They can be compared to neighborhoods in Berlin.
