Kips Bay is a neighborhood in the New York borough of Manhattan in the United States .

location

Since there are no official boundaries between New York's neighborhoods, it is not easy to define them. Kips Bay is bordered on the south by East 23rd Street and on the north by East 34th Street . Lexington Avenue forms the border to the west and the East River to the east . However, some see the western border much further east (on Second Avenue ) and further north (East 38th Street ).

To the north of Kips Bay is the Murray Hill district , to the west Midtown East or Rose Hill and to the south Gramercy Park and the Peter Cooper Village apartment complex. In the east, the Waterside Plaza settlement with the UNIS ( United Nations International School ) borders directly on Kips Bay.

Kips Bay is administratively part of Manhattan Community Board 6 .

history

Kips Bay was named after the Dutch settler Jacobus Henderson Kip , whose farm was north of 30th Street on a bay of the East River, so this bay got his name. The bay was filled up, but the name Kips Bay has held up.

Kip built a large stone and brick house near what is now the intersection of Second Avenue and East 35th Street . Iron digits set into the brickwork on the gable end of the house announced the year of construction. It stood from 1655 to 1851 and was expanded several times. When it was finally demolished, it was the last remaining farmhouse in old New Amsterdam .

The garden on this property was famous and when George Washington received an offshoot of a vinegar rose from this very garden during his first term in office, the claim was made that the garden was the first to be planted in the colonies.

Where the beginning of East 33rd Street is today, the landing at Kips Bay took place on September 15, 1776 during the Battle of New York and New Jersey as part of the American Revolutionary War . About 4,000 soldiers of the British Army landed under General William Howe and defeated about 500 American militiamen under the command of Colonel William Douglas . American forces withdrew immediately and the British occupied New York City soon after.

The last late 18th or early 19th century building in the neighborhood (203 East 29th Street ) is a rebuilt white wooden house dated between 1790 and 1870. It is one of only a handful of wooden houses still standing in Manhattan. The home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places , is privately owned and cannot be visited.

The Kips Bay area is dominated by New York University buildings along First Avenue such as the Tisch School of the Arts , NYU College of Dentistry , NYU School of Medicine , Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine , Bellevue Hospital Center teaching hospital, and the Manhattan VA Hospital .
