East Harlem or Spanish Harlem (also El Barrio , formerly Italian Harlem ) is part of the Harlem district in Manhattan in New York City , USA .

location

Spanish Harlem extends from East 96th Street to East 125th Street and is bounded by the Upper East Side , East River , Harlem and Central Park or Fifth Avenue . Due to the further influx of the South American population, the district is growing increasingly.

East Harlem encompasses the Spanish Harlem area but extends further north to East 141st Street and is also between the East River and 5th Avenue.

history

Since the 1950s it has been populated by immigrants from Puerto Rico ( Nuyoricans - suitcase word from New York and (Puerto) Ricans) and from the Dominican Republic ( Dominicanyorks - suitcase word from Dominicans and New York). It was previously inhabited by Italians and therefore also called Italian Harlem.

Several well-known artists and writers grew up in the district, such as Eddie Palmieri , Tito Puente , Souren Baronian , Marc Anthony and Tupac Shakur . Spanish Harlem has been sung by Ben E. King , Aretha Franklin and The Mamas and the Papas ( Spanish Harlem ), Louie Ramirez ( Lucy's Spanish Harlem ) and Bob Dylan ( Spanish Harlem Incident ). From the Beirut group there is the title East Harlem .
