Eddie Palmieri
Eddie Palmieri (born December 15, 1936 in New York City ) is an American pianist and orchestra conductor . He is known as a representative of Latin American jazz and is also at home in salsa and New York salsa.
life and work
His parents, some of Italian origin, emigrated from Ponce (Puerto Rico) in 1926 and settled in Spanish Harlem , a Latin American ghetto in Manhattan .
Palmieri had been playing since the age of five and became interested in jazz from an early age. He took piano lessons and performed at Carnegie Hall when he was eleven . At the age of 14, Palmieri founded his first group and also played in other groups, for example with Tito Rodríguez .
In 1962 he founded the group La Perfecta, with which he popularized the Charanga style and recorded Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso and Muñeca . In 1968 the group disbanded.
In 1971 he recorded with his brother, Charlie Palmieri , ( organ ), Vamos Pa'l Monte and Eddie Palmieri & Friends in Concert, Live at the University of Puerto Rico . In 1976 Palmieri became the first Latin American musician to receive a Grammy for The Sun of Latin Music.
In the 1980s he received two Grammys for Palo Pa Rumbo and Solito. In 1987 he recorded La Verdad, and a year later El Rumbero Del Piano . In the 1990s he performed with the Fania All-Stars and the Tico All-Stars, among others. In 2000 he announced his retirement from music. However, he still recorded the album Masterpiece with Tito Puente and received his sixth and seventh Grammy for it.
