The University of Puerto Rico ( Spanish Universidad de Puerto Rico ), abbreviated UPR , has existed since 1903 and is the oldest and largest university in Puerto Rico . It is state sponsored ( Universidad pública ). Their seat is San Juan .
history
In 1900, the Escuela Normal Industrial in Fajardo was established as the first higher education institution in Puerto Rico. The following year the institution was relocated to Rio Piedras. On March 12, 1903, a law establishing the university was passed. On that day, the Escuela Normal was declared the first department of the university.
In 1908, through the Morill Act, the federal government increased financial grants for the University of Puerto Rico. This also made it possible to found the El Colegio de Agricultura , an academic agricultural school in Mayagüez , in 1911. A year later this was renamed Colegio de Agricultura y Artes Mecánicas (CAAM).
On September 20, 1966, then governor Roberto Sánchez Vilella signed a law to reorganize the university, which had effects on the following areas, among others:
- Full autonomy of the School of Medicine with its own (new) campus.
- Full autonomy of the Mayagüez and Río Piedras campuses
- Establishment of the branches in Arecibo , Cayey and Humacao .
