history

The city is sometimes given the nickname El Pueblo del Chicharrón ('Village of the Pigskin '). Juan Ramírez de Arrellano granted Bayamón city rights on May 22, 1772. The name is supposedly derived from a local Indian chief named Bahamon ; According to other sources, the name is derived from the Taíno word Bayamongo , the name of a river that flows through the city.
