Orlando Maldonado (born November 21, 1959 in Bayamon , Puerto Rico ) is a retired Puerto Rican light flyweight boxer.

amateur

Maldonado won the bronze medal light flyweight at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . In the semifinals he was defeated by the Cuban Jorge Hernández on points.

professional

He turned pro in 1977 and started with a series of twenty fights without loss with two draws. He fought for the title of Puerto Rican light flyweight champion and defended it once.

His 21st fight was the high point of his professional career. In August 1980 he won against Enrique Guadamuz in the first round by knockout and was thus Central American champion of the WBC in the light flyweight division .

Then Maldonado wobbled. The next two fights, fortunately not advertised as title fights, he lost. In October 1983 he got the opportunity to compete against the WBC world champion Rafael Oronó from Venezuela . After 41 seconds of the fifth round Maldonado lost by technical knockout. After another defeat in May 1984, he retired from boxing.
