The World Boxing Council ( WBC ) is a Mexico- based boxing association that organizes official fights and awards the WBC world titles in professional boxing . In addition to the World Boxing Association (WBA), the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF), the WBC is one of the four major boxing associations whose world championship titles are recognized internationally - and by the associations among themselves.

history

The association was founded in 1963 and was the first to separate itself from the World Boxing Association (WBA). It was not until 1978 that he determined his own heavyweight world champion with Ken Norton , when he could not compete against Leon Spinks . He is considered one of the most skillfully managed associations with titleholders such as Floyd Mayweather , Manny Pacquiao and Hasim Rahman . Veteran José Sulaimán was at the helm for more than 38 years until his death in January 2014 .

Near bankruptcy

In 1998, the reigning title holder Roy Jones Jr. said that he would no longer fight in the light heavyweight division and change the weight class in the future. Without consulting Jones, who only wanted these statements to be understood as a non-binding declaration of intent, the association arranged a fight for the supposedly "vacant" title between Graciano Rocchigiani and Michael Nunn , which Rocchigiani won. When Jones abandoned his plans, the WBC gave him the title back. Rocchigiani was told it had been a mistake and he sued the association. On May 7, 2003 in Manhattan (New York) a decision was made in his favor and the sum of around 31 million dollars was awarded to him. According to Sulaimán, in arbitration negotiations the WBC Rocchigiani offered an immediate payment of $ 2.5 million in cash and $ 0.5 million annually for the next 20 years. Rocchigiani initially did not accept this offer. Thus, the WBC was forced to file for bankruptcy on June 14, 2004. In order to be able to continue the work of the association, it was considered to found a new association called Universal Boxing Organization (UBO). The WBC continued to try to reach a settlement. In mid-July 2004, on the advice of several people from the boxer scene, Rocchigiani entered into a settlement, which for a long time was only known to be several payments spread over seven years, the amount of which was agreed not to disclose. It was not until years later that the total amount of 4.5 million dollars (about 3.6 million euros) became known.

Competing organizations

In addition to the rival organization WBA , the IBF was founded in 1983 , which had a well-known heavyweight in Larry Holmes .

In 1988 the WBO and almost a dozen other associations were established.

Scandals

In 1990 the WBC thought seriously about dismissing "Buster" Douglas of the title after his sensational knockout victory over Mike Tyson because the referee counted too slowly when Douglas was himself on the ground. The British boxing magazine "Boxing Monthly":

“Tyson's promoter, Don King at the time , tried to invalidate this result as referee Octavio Meyran Douglas counted too slowly when the challenger was knocked down in the eighth round. He said the record of the fight showed that Douglas was on the ring floor for more than ten seconds. However, since Meyran took the counting cycle incorrectly from the timekeeper, Douglas just did what he had to do, namely to be up at nine and finish the counting with it. Initially, WBC President Sulaiman seemed genuinely ready to accept King's proposal and not judge the fight. However, the IBF immediately announced that it would recognize Douglas as the new world champion. The WBA also announced that it would recognize Douglas. The WBC then followed their example belatedly. "
