Roy Levesta Jones junior ( Russian Рой Левеста Джонс-младший , scientific transliteration Roj Levesta Džons-mladšij; born January 16, 1969 in Pensacola , Florida ) is a former Russian - American professional boxer and former world champion in five weight classes (middleweight, superweight , Light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight).

From 1989 to 2003 Jones was considered to be almost invincible and the best boxer in the world according to the classification pound for pound , the fighting strength in relation to weight.

amateur

Roy Jones junior was trained by his father Roy Jones Sr., himself a former professional boxer, from an early age. As an amateur, he won 121 fights with 13 defeats. He won the 1986 National Golden Gloves light welterweight and 1987 the National Golden Gloves light middleweight.

In 1986 he won the bronze medal in the light welterweight division at the 1st Goodwill Games in Moscow , he was only defeated in the semifinals to the 1989 world champion, Igor Ruschnikow from the Soviet Union. At the Junior World Cup in Cuba in 1987, he lost to Andy Liebing from Berlin . At the National Golden Gloves 1988 he lost to Gerald McClellan and reached 3rd place. The Olympic Trials, the qualifying tournament for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , he won by winning the final against the 1986 National Golden Glove Welterweight Champion and later professional world champion Frankie Liles .

At the age of 19 he was the youngest member of the US boxing team to take part in the Olympic Games, where he reached the light middleweight finals without losing a round. He dominated the fight against the Korean local hero Si-Hun Park ; Park was counted in the second round. Nevertheless, Jones lost the fight controversial with 2: 3 judges votes. This decision is considered to be one of the most extreme misjudgments in the history of amateur boxing. In return, Jones was awarded the Val Barker Cup as the technically best boxer of the games. Professional career

Beginnings

After the Olympics, he turned professional. Despite many offers from promoters, he remained independent. His father was initially his trainer, manager and promoter. From mid-1992 he was looked after by Alton Merkerson, coach of the USA boxing team at the 1988 Olympic Games.

He won his first 17 professional fights by knockout, including against the future US champion Ron Amundsen, the former US champions Rollin Williams and Art Serwano, the former American continental champion of the WBC Ricky Stackhouse, as well as the multiple Mexican champion and former WBC world champion Jorge Vaca . On June 30, 1992, he won his first points by a unanimous decision against the later WBA World Champion Jorge Fernando Castro , who had only suffered three defeats in 75 professional fights. On August 18, 1992, he defeated the undefeated (24-0) Glenn Thomas with a technical knockout in round 8.

On December 5, 1992, he won the American Continental Championship of the WBC by technical knockout in the fourth round against Percy Harris. On February 13, 1993, he defeated the World Cup challenger Glenn Wolfe by technical knockout in round 1, causing him the only premature defeat of his career.

IBF middleweight world champion

On May 22, 1993, he defeated the later record boxer Bernard Hopkins in the fight for the vacant IBF World Championship by a unanimous decision on points. It would be Hopkins' only clear defeat to date. Jones had injured his right hand prior to this fight. On August 14, 1993 he beat the later WBC world champion Thulani Malinga by knockout in round 6 and inflicted his first premature defeat on him. Then he won over the Venezuelan master Fermin Chirino, as well as the master from Puerto Rico, Danny Garcia. He defended his world title on May 27, 1994 by technical knockout in round 2 against Thomas Tate, also his first premature defeat.

IBF super middleweight world champion

On November 18, 1994 he won the IBF world title in the next higher weight class, the super middleweight, by unanimously winning points against the undefeated title holder James Toney in 46 professional fights .

On March 18, 1995 he defended his title by technical knockout in round 1 against Antoine Byrd and on June 24, 1995 by technical knockout in round 6 against Vinny Pazienza , former world champion in light and light middleweight. On September 30, 1995 he won against the multiple world championship challenger Tony Thornton by technical knockout in round 3 and on January 12, 1996 by technical knockout in round 2 against North America champion Merqui Sosa.

On June 15, 1996 he defended his title against the later WBC world champion Éric Lucas by technical knockout in round 11, and on October 4, 1996 by technical knockout in the second round against the undefeated Bryant Brannon. At the time he was so dominant in the weight class that he played a semi-professional basketball game a few hours before defending his title against Eric Lucas.

WBC light heavyweight champion

After his promotion to the light heavyweight division, he won the WBC interim world championship on November 22, 1996 with a unanimous victory over Mike McCallum , former WBA world champion in light middle and middleweight and former WBC world champion in light heavyweight ...

In March 1997 he was named reigning WBC world champion and on March 21, 1997 he played his first title defense against the undefeated Montell Griffin , who won each of his 26 professional fights, 18 of which by knockout. By then, Jones had won each of his 34 professional fights, 29 of them by knockout. Jones went into the fight as a big favorite and dominated the duel, in round 7 Griffin went down for the first time and was counted. In round 9, Jones managed to knock down again, but he checked the already kneeling Griffin twice and was disqualified for it. However, since the defeat was not caused by an opponent, but by a foul, his reputation as the best boxer in his weight class was still not damaged. Jones justified the foul with the fact that Griffin had ducked unusually low several times during the fight and then hit back. To forestall this recoil, he would have followed up without realizing that Griffin was already on the ground with one knee. This explanation was received with skepticism by experts, however, as Griffin was standing upright at the time of the second rainfall and was without any cover. Jones won the direct rematch against Griffin on August 7th of the same year with a spectacular knockout victory in the first round.

On April 25, 1998, he beat Virgil Hill in a non-title fight by a body hit in the fourth round knockout, the first premature loss in Hill's career. On July 18, 1998, he also won the WBA world title by unanimously winning points against Lou Del Valle and defended both titles ahead of schedule against former WBO world champions Otis Grant and Richard Frazier.

On June 5, 1999, he beat Reggie Johnson by unanimous victory on points and thus united the world titles of the WBC, WBA and IBF and thus held three of the four recognized world titles in a weight class. There was only one fight with the WBO title holder and linear light heavyweight world champion Dariusz Michalczewski .

He defended his title against US champion David Telesco and ex-WBA world champion Richard Hall , before he also secured the IBO world title on September 9, 2000 with a technical knockout in round 10 against Eric Harding . On February 24, 2001 he was the first boxer to win early against the rising Derrick Harmon and then defeated the undefeated, later WBO world champion Julio González and the also undefeated Glen Kelly. On September 7th, 2002 he defeated the former European champion and later IBF world champion Clinton Woods with a technical knockout in round 6.

Although the prestigious duel against Michalczewski never came about, Jones is seen as the stronger boxer at the time. He won against Julio González, who was the first to defeat Michalczewski, every round and had him down several times. In other cross-comparisons, too, Jones was seen to be far more dominant. For example, he played with Richard Hall at will and had him on the ground three times in the first round - Michalczewski never managed to do this once in two grueling fights against Hall and, in contrast to Jones, who was almost never hit by Hall, was heavily drawn after both duels. However, both Hall and Jones tested positive for anabolic steroids in the A sample in that fight . The B sample, however, was never checked and the doping result had no consequences.

Jones was considered the measure of all things in the light heavyweight division and had been awarded three of the four most influential world titles in a weight class (WBC, IBF, WBA), as well as the world titles of the WBF, IBA and IBO before his promotion to heavyweight.

WBA heavyweight world champion

He achieved his greatest feat in 2003 when he dared to jump straight from light heavyweight to heavyweight. The promotion to the next higher weight class ( cruiserweight ), which was weak at the time, was skipped by Jones so that he could secure a title in the premier class (heavyweight) directly. He succeeded on March 1, 2003 with a high points victory over John Ruiz ; during the whole fight Jones never got into trouble. He demonstrated his superiority primarily through his speed, as was to be expected from a former light heavyweight, but also through the punch, which Ruiz clearly felt in the fourth round. Only two boxers in boxing history managed something comparable, including Michael Spinks in 1985 , with a narrow point victory over the then undefeated world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes . Some journalists suspected that the flattering point win for Spinks should prevent Holmes from setting the legendary winner record for Rocky Marciano (49-0). Back in the light heavyweight division

Now Jones took on another challenge: challenged by Antonio Tarver , he trained his weight back down by eight kilograms in a few months in order to win the world light heavyweight title again. Many experts rated this as a very risky step, since Sugar Ray Leonard had had little success in his attempt to return from super middle to his traditional light middleweight class and lost high on points against Terry Norris, the loss of substance was too great. After an even battle between Jones and Tarver, the verdict was 114: 114, 117: 111 and 116: 112 for Jones. Thus, Jones was on November 8, 2003 light heavyweight world champion according to the version of the WBC, WBA and IBO and wrote history again.

As many viewers considered the verdict controversial, voices were raised after a rematch. Jones originally wanted to end his career with a fight against Mike Tyson , but that fight never came off. Jones blamed his rapid weight loss for his unexpectedly pale performance against Tarver and wanted to convince himself and his critics of this with a clear win in the rematch. On May 15, 2004 there was therefore a rematch between Jones and Tarver, in which Tarver completely surprisingly recovered the world title with a knockout victory in the second round and destroyed Jones' myth of invincibility. Despite the initial admiration, Tarver had to accept increasing criticism that the knockout blow was his first hit and a so-called "lucky punch" in which he even closed his eyes. Before their duel in 2006, Bernard Hopkins dubbed him a "one-hit wonder".

Jones could never really recover from this defeat, it is considered a turning point in his career. On September 25, 2004, he lost again, this time against the not exactly as hard-hitting Jamaican Glen Johnson in the ninth round by another heavy knockout. Jones' lethargy and a lack of willingness to strike back at all were conspicuous.

On October 1, 2005 there was the third duel for the IBA and IBO titles between Roy Jones junior and Tarver. The fight went over the full distance of twelve rounds and the judges saw the reigning world champion Tarver clearly ahead. What was striking in this fight was the unusually careful boxing style of Jones. After the fight, he admitted that his primary goal in this fight was to prove to himself that he could get through the twelve rounds in his usual style without getting into distress. Nevertheless, he suffered the third defeat in a row and his fourth defeat ever.

Some time after that fight, Jones commented on the defeat, blaming his father for having mentored him during that fight. Previously, Alton Merkerson was his long-time coach. Jones lost on purpose so that his father wouldn't get the glory if he won.

On July 29, 2006, he met Prince Badi Ajamu. Jones emerged victorious from the fight. The fight went the full distance and Jones won clearly on points. Although Jones could knock Calzaghe to the ground in the first round, he ultimately lost this fight significantly on points. Then Jones defeated Omar Sheika in March 2009 by knockout in the fifth round. On August 15, 2009 Jones was able to defeat former IBF super middleweight title holder Jeff Lacy after giving up through his corner of the ring in the tenth round. Lacy hadn't suffered a premature defeat until then.

On September 25, 2009, Jones and Bernard Hopkins announced that they would fight a fight in the spring of 2010 if Jones defeated the Australian Danny Green . On December 2, 2009, Jones was beaten by Green in Sydney in the first round by a technical knockout. Despite the defeat, Jones went to Las Vegas on April 3, 2010 to duel the now 45-year-old Hopkins. Jones lost the encounter, 17 years after their first encounter in the middleweight division, over twelve rounds clearly on points.

On May 21, 2011 he lost in Moscow against the Russian Denis Lebedew by knockout in round 10. The following fight on December 10, 2011 against Max Alexander (14-5) he won after ten rounds unanimously on points.

On June 30, 2012, he won against the undefeated Poland Pawel Glazewski (17-0) on points. This was followed by six wins in Russia, Latvia and the USA before losing to Enzo Maccarinelli in December 2015 . In 2001 Jones started his own record company called Body Head Entertainment; his debut single was Ya'll must've forgot . In 2004 he founded the band Body Head Bangerz .

Others

Roy Jones Jr. starred in the film Matrix Reloaded as the character "Captain Ballard". He also made a brief appearance in Da Block Party and In The Devil's Order . He also had two guest appearances on the 1996 sitcom A Terribly Nice Family , in which he played himself. In 2012 he played the role of Mess Hall Unisol in the movie Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning . In the movie Two of the Old School , he played himself again.

In August 2015, Roy Jones took part in a show in Crimea ; he had previously met with Vladimir Putin in Sevastopol and, according to the Kremlin, asked him for a Russian passport. As a result, he received Russian citizenship by decree on September 12th .
