Jorge Fernando Castro (born August 18, 1967 in Caleta Olivia ) is a former Argentine professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA middleweight division.

Boxing career

Jorge Fernando Castro turned pro in 1987 and went undefeated in his first 39 fights. He also managed to win points over ten rounds against World Cup challenger Lorenzo Luis Garcia (71-7). In the rematch four months later, Castro suffered his first defeat when he lost over ten rounds on points. After 14 more wins, including against Miguel Ángel Arroyo (46-5), he suffered another defeat in October 1990 against Héctor Hugo Vilte (45-7).

On October 14, 1990 he was a knockout victory in the twelfth round against Hugo Raúl Marinangeli (35-6), South American light middleweight champion and defended the title u. a. by knockout again in the first round against Miguel Ángel Arroyo (52-7). In April 1991 he also won prematurely against Mario Alberto Gastón Chavez (27-1).

On December 13, 1991 he received in Paris a WBC world title chance in the light middleweight division against Terry Norris , but lost over twelve rounds on points. On June 30, 1992, he was also defeated on points to the record world champion Roy Jones junior . However, he won his next 23 fights in a row, 15 of them prematurely. He also won two more wins against Lorenzo Luis Garcia and this time also a win against Héctor Hugo Vilte.

On August 12, 1994 he won by beating Reggie Johnson (35-3) on points, the vacant WBA World Middleweight Championship. In November 1994 he defended the title by knockout in the second round against Alex Ramos (39-9). In his second defense on December 10, 1994, he won by knockout in the ninth round against John Jackson (32-0), and the fight was voted "Fight of the Year" by Ring Magazine . He was also able to defend his title against Anthony Andrews (23-8) in May 1995 with a knockout in the twelfth round. On October 13, 1995, he faced Reggie Johnson in a rematch and won again on points. On December 19, 1995 he lost the WBA belt in Tokyo by losing points to Shinji Takehara from Japan (23-0).

On February 15, 1997, he won unanimously on points against Roberto Durán , but lost to this in the rematch. In January 1998 he was knocked out against Rogério Lobo (13-1), Latin American champion of the WBA in the super middleweight division and then again beat John Jackson, as well as Juan Carlos Giménez (51-9) and Fabián Alberto Chancalay (43- 6). On December 16, 2000 he boxed in the Essen Grugahalle against Juan Carlos Gómez (31-0) for the WBC cruiserweight championship, but lost for the first time in his career prematurely in the tenth round.

With subsequent victories against Roberto Coelho (29-5), Peter Venâncio (38-4) and Imamu Mayfield (21-3), he got a world title chance of the IBF in cruiserweight against Vasily Schirow (30 -0), but was subject to this on points. On July 12, 2003 he lost in the fight for the IBO world cruiserweight championship, against the South African Sebastiaan Rothmann (16-1).

In December 2003 he won again the South American Championship, and in January 2005 the Latin American championship belt of the WBA. He played his last professional fight on January 27, 2007 against José Luis Herrera (14-2) and won by knockout in the second round.
