John David Jackson (born May 17, 1963 in Denver , Colorado ) is a former American professional boxer. He was WBO world champion in light middleweight, as well as WBA world champion in middleweight.

Boxing career

As an amateur, he trained in Tacoma and was runner-up in the US light middleweight division in 1981. For the 1980 Olympic Games , he had not been able to qualify because he was defeated in the national elimination against reigning US champion Gene Hatcher (later WBA world champion).

He turned professional in 1984 and remained undefeated for more than ten years. On January 13, 1987 he was with a tKo win against Sidney Outlaw, Light Middleweight Champion of Pennsylvania . On December 8, 1988 he won with an early win against Lupe Aquino (33-4), the WBO world championship in light middleweight and also became the first WBO title holder in this weight class. After an early title defense against Steve Little (later WBA super middleweight champion), he boxed against Martin Camara in February 1990. The fight ended after the eleventh round ( no contest ), as Camara refused to box the twelfth round. The reason for this was a mistake by the referee who inadvertently ended the fight prematurely after an alleged knockdown by Jackson and Camara now felt cheated out of a victory.

On October 23, 1990 Jackson defended his title unanimously on points against the British Chris Pyatt (30-2), and on July 21, 1991 also unanimously against Tyrone Trice (38-3). In June 1992 he won early against Pat Lawlor (18-1), and in December on points against Sergio Medina (35-6). In his sixth and last defense of the title on December 19, 1992, he defeated Michele Mastrodonato (17-1) by tKo in the tenth round.

On October 1, 1993, he won in Buenos Aires with a unanimous victory over Reggie Johnson (34-2), the WBA World Middleweight Championship. But already in the first title defense on December 10, 1994 against Jorge Fernando Castro (95-4), Jackson lost prematurely through tKo in the ninth round. Also in the fight for the IBF World Championship on April 19, 1997 against Bernard Hopkins (30-2), Jackson lost prematurely in the sixth round. He also lost the rematch against Jorge Fernando Castro in February 1998 on points.

After a knockout win against Dave Boone in September 1999, he ended his career.
