Chris Pyatt (born July 3, 1963 in London ) is a former British professional boxer and former world champion of the WBO middleweight division.

Amateur career

At the English Championships in 1981 he lost in the final of the welterweight Terry Marsh , who later wrote sports history as the first undefeated retired boxing world champion in Europe. 1982 Pyatt became English welterweight champion and won the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane .

Professional career

In March 1983 he played his first professional fight and won 15 fights in a row, 11 of them prematurely. He boxed 12 times against opponents with a positive match record. On September 23, 1985 he suffered his first defeat when he sustained an eye injury in the fight against the Italian Sabiyala Diavilla which led to the fight being abandoned in the fourth round. Diavilla was declared the winner through technical knockout (tKo).

But already in his next fight on February 19, 1986 in London, he finally became the new British light middleweight champion with a knockout victory against Prince Rodney (30-6). After a first round knockout against the American Thomas Smith (17-5), he also won the EBU European title in light middleweight on September 17, 1986 ; he defeated the Benelux champion John van Elteren (13-1) by tKo in the first round. However, he lost the title in the first defense on January 28, 1987 by losing points to the Italian Gianfranco Rosi (38-2).

With 11 subsequent wins, 10 of them by knockout against boxers like Daniel Omar Dominguez (24-2) and Hugo Daniel Sclarandi (15-0), he got a WBO title chance in the light middleweight division on October 23, 1990 in Leicester against John David Jackson (21-0) from the USA. However, Pyatt lost the fight over 12 rounds on points. But even here he won the Commonwealth Light Middleweight Championship against Craig Trotter in his next fight on November 5, 1991 and defended the title against the undefeated Ambrose Mlilo from Zimbabwe and the also undefeated James Tapisha from Zambia.

After losing the title and switching to middleweight division, he won the WBC's international championship title on October 27, 1992 by knocking out Adolfo Caballero (17-2). After defending his title against Danny García (25-7) from Puerto Rico and two more construction wins, he boxed on May 19, 1993 in Leicester for the WBO World Middleweight Championship. He won it unanimously on points against Sumbu Kalambay (57-5) and then defended the belt in September by knockout against the Argentine Hugo Antonio Corti (25-3) and in February 1994 also by knockout against Mark Cameron (15-3). On May 11, 1994, however, he lost the title prematurely in his third defense to Steve Collins (27-3).

After three wins and re-winning the Commonwealth Light Middleweight Championship, he lost in July 1996 on points to Steve Foster (18-13). In May 1997 he ended his career with a points win against Maurice Forbes (8-1). He then became a boxing trainer and owner of the Braunstone Boxing Club in Leicester.
