Imamu Amiri Mayfield (* 19th April 1972 in Freehold , New Jersey , USA ) is a former American professional boxer and world champion of the IBF in the cruiserweight division .

Professional career

Mayfield won his first three fights all by classic knockout and was defeated in his fourth fight by his compatriot Richie Brown over four rounds unanimously on points. In 1996 he defeated Ernest Mateen (25-5) by TKo in round 4.

On November 11, 1997, he took the Jamaican Uriah Grant from the world title by a unanimous decision. He defended this belt in March of the following year against the undefeated British Terry Dunstan with a classic knockout in round 11. In October of the same year he lost the title by technical knockout in the 9th round to Arthur Williams .

In December 1999 he played against Louis Azille (12-0) for the WBA-NABA belt and reached only one draw. The following year he met the Cuban Juan Carlos Gómez - Gomez held the title of the WBC , which was also at stake. Mayfield was knocked out in the 3rd round

In 2001 he beat Oscar Angel Gomez (14-4) by giving up and won the vacant USBA title with a knockout victory against Gary Wilcox (15-2-). However, he also had to admit defeat to the experienced Argentine and former WBA middleweight world champion Jorge Fernando Castro (118-7-3) prematurely in round 9.

In 2002 he went to the heavyweight division against Okello Peter (11-0) and defeated him on points. Mayfield lost his last fight, which took place in 2008 against Johnathon Banks in the cruiserweight division, at the age of 35 in the first round to a technical knockout.
