Johnathon Maurice Banks (born June 22, 1982 in Southfield , Michigan ) is a former American professional boxer and trainer.

career

Banks, who grew up in Detroit with ten siblings and started boxing at the age of 14, fought cruiserweight and was IBO World Champion from July 12, 2008 to February 27, 2009 . He made his professional debut on July 30, 2004 against Deandre McCole. On June 22, 2013, he lost the title fight for the WBO World Championship against Seth Mitchell .

On his comeback on December 11, 2014, he lost by knockout against Antonio Tarver in Temescula. This fight was his last as a professional boxer.

Trainer

After the death of Emanuel Steward in October 2012, Banks became the new coach of his previous sparring partner Wladimir Klitschko in November 2012 . Banks had also worked as an assistant stewards coach. He became the only world champion trainer who was still in the ring as a professional boxer. He looked after Klitschko until his last fight against Anthony Joshua in 2017. In spring 2019 he became the new coach of Gennadi Golowkin .
