Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua , OBE (born October 15, 1989 in Watford , England ) is a British boxer and two-time world heavyweight champion according to the IBF , WBA , WBO and IBO versions . He became amateur vice world champion in 2011 and super heavyweight Olympic champion in 2012 .
Joshua is trained by Robert McCracken .
Life
Anthony Joshua was born to Nigerian immigrants in Watford , north-west London , and grew up with two sisters and a brother in his birthplace. He left school early and began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer . He described his youth as "extraordinarily happy", yet he slipped into the criminal milieu and was involved in fights and arson . A conviction in 2009 forced him to wear an electronic ankle cuff for 13 months . In 2011 during a police traffic stop in Colindale , London's Barnet borough, over 220 grams of marijuana was found in his vehicle, leading to drug possession charges with intent to sell due to the quantity of the narcotic. Joshua was in custody for two weeks and barely escaped several years in prison. He was sentenced to twelve months of community service and 100 hours of community service.
Amateur career
Joshua was already a talented athlete in his youth and originally wanted to be a football player or track and field athlete . He ran the 100 meters in 11.6 seconds. He only came to boxing at the age of 18 when he accompanied his cousin to a trial session at the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club in Barnet in 2007. He began to train regularly at Finchley ABC and completed his first amateur fight that same year. He was the English newcomer champion in 2009 and won the international "Haringey Tournament" in London. That year, however, he also suffered his first defeat, against compatriot Dillian Whyte on points. In 2010 he became English Champion, again won the Haringey Tournament and also the British Championships in Manchester . He also defeated the Irish Chris Devanney and Chris Turner in international matches. In 2011 he was again English champion and defeated Otto Wallin from Sweden in a match between countries.
He was then sent to the 39th European Championships in Ankara , where he defeated the German Eric Brechlin with 23:16 and Cathal McMonagle from Ireland with 22:10. In the quarterfinals, however, he lost prematurely against the Romanian Mihai Nistor and was eliminated without a medal. Nevertheless, he took part in the 16th World Championships in Baku , where he sensationally won the silver medal. He beat Tariq Abdul-Haqq and Juan Isidro Hiracheta early in the preliminary rounds, prevailed in the round of 16 against Moroccan Mohamed Arjaoui and defeated the Olympic champion and two-time world champion Roberto Cammarelle 15:13 in the quarter-finals . With an early win against the German Erik Pfeifer , he moved into the final, where he was only marginally defeated by 21:22 Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov from Azerbaijan. By December 2011 he had won 31 of 34 fights and was ranked number 3 in the world by the AIBA .
In 2012 he won the international boxing tournament "Bocskai Memorial Tournament" in Hungary , where he also defeated European champion Sergei Kuzmin in the semifinals . He also achieved first place at the international "Algirdas Šocikas Tournament" in Lithuania . At the 30th Summer Olympics in London , he won the last 16 fight with a 17:16 point score against the Cuban Erislandy Savón . In the quarterfinals he won 15:11 against the Chinese Zhang Zhilei and was thus in the semi-finals, where he defeated the Kazak Iwan Dytschko 13:11 and moved into the final. There he defeated Roberto Cammarelle +18: 18.
Professional career
He played his first professional fight on October 5, 2013 in London against Emanuele Leo (record: 8-0-0) and won by knockout in the first round. In September 2014 he won against Konstantin Airich prematurely . In October of the same year he beat Denis Bachtow by TKO in round 2 and secured the international title of the WBC . He won against Michael Sprott in a BBBofC eliminator in November 2014 in the first round.
In May 2015, he defeated Kevin Johnson prematurely in Round 2, defending his WBC International title for the first time. Johnson had to go to the ground twice in the first lap, the second time his upper body even fell through the ring ropes. It was the first time that Johnson, whom Vitali Klitschko chose to voluntarily defend his title in 2009 and defeated on points, k. o. went. Klitschko wasn't the only known boxer Johnson was in the ring against. He also competed against the Englishmen Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora . Chisora could throw him to the ground, but ultimately couldn't knock him out. In September of the same year he met the 2.01 m tall, 113 kg heavy, until then unbeaten (record: 21-0-0) Scotsman Gary Cornish . Cornish was unbeaten not only among the professionals, but also among the amateurs. Joshua beat Cornish k in the first round. o. and thus inflicted his first defeat on him. With this victory he not only defended the international belt of the WBC, but also won the Commonwealth title . Exactly three months later, Joshua faced his strongest opponent to date, his compatriot, the Jamaican-born , physically strong puncher Dillian Whyte , who had defeated him in the amateurs. In the 7th round Joshua beat Whyte k. O.
On April 9, 2016 Joshua boxed against the American Charles Martin . He won by knockout. In the second round and has since current world champion of the IBF . Against the American Dominic Breazeale , Joshua completed his first (voluntary) title defense a good ten weeks later at The O2 Arena in London. The Briton was also able to win this battle with a technical knockout in round 7. On December 10, 2016, he defended his World Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight title against Eric Molina in Manchester , England . He won by a technical knockout in round 3.
On April 29, 2017, Anthony Joshua fought Wladimir Klitschko in front of 90,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium . It was about the defense of the IBF title as well as the vacant titles of the IBO and the WBA superchampion . Joshua was able to win the fight by technical knockout in the 11th round, after both boxers had gone down in the fifth and sixth round and had to be counted. This fight was the longest in his professional career so far; previously no other opponent had got past the 7th round. A title defense of his world championship title against the Bulgarian Kubrat Pulew was planned for October 28, 2017 . However, this had to cancel almost two weeks before the fight due to injury. As a substitute opponent for October 28, the Cameroonian Carlos Takam , who competed for France , was found. Joshua entered this fight, which was played at the Millennium Stadium in the Welsh capital Cardiff , with a record weight (115.2 kg). Joshua knocked Takam to the ground in round 4 and decided this battle by breaking off in round 10 for himself.
Also at Millennium Stadium, Joshua fought 26-year-old New Zealander Joseph Parker in late March 2018 . This fight was a title association - it was about the world championship of the associations IBF, WBA (Superchampion) and WBO. In front of around 78,000 spectators, Joshua won by unanimous decision. On September 22nd, he defended this world title in London's Wembley Stadium against the Russian WBA mandatory challenger Alexander Powetkin (39) and won by a technical knockout in the 7th round.
On June 1, 2019, he was surprisingly defeated by the American of Mexican origin Andy Ruiz Jr. by technical knockout in the seventh round and thereby lost his world title. Ruiz had to go down in the third lap, but countered with two downfalls in the same lap. After Joshua was knocked down twice more in the seventh round, the referee stopped the fight. Ruiz only had six weeks to prepare for the fight with Joshua, as he stood in at short notice for the originally intended opponent Jarrel Miller , who had failed due to a positive doping test.
The rematch on December 7, 2019 in Diriyya was won by Joshua against Ruiz by unanimous decision.
Boxing style
As a muscular athlete, Joshua looks for the infight to be able to use his enormous power effectively. However, he usually boxed in a tactically disciplined manner and took few risks. His defensive work is varied, sometimes he pulls up both fists when the opponent attacks, sometimes he moves his head to the side or dives. This makes it difficult for the opponent to achieve so-called impact hits. Joshua often boxes more defensively and lets the opponent run up, but switches to the offensive in a flash if he bares his cover. In his 19th professional fight against Wladimir Klitschko, he also showed taker qualities by staggering in the ring after a chin hit in the 5th round after he had sent Klitschko on the boards in the same round. In addition, he went down in the 6th round with a blow from Klitschko himself. He also recovered from this and finally ended the fight prematurely in the 11th round by a TKO.
