Kubrat Wenkow Pulew (also written Kubrat Venkov Pulev , Bulgarian Кубрат Венков Пулев ; born May 4, 1981 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian boxer and former European heavyweight champion (EBU). His brother Terwel Pulew is also active as a boxer.
Amateur career (2001-2009)
Kubrat Wenkow Pulew, known as "The Cobra", was a sergeant in the Bulgarian army during his time as an amateur boxer and as such a member of the CSKA Sofia army sports club . His trainer there was Mikhail Takov. Pulew has belonged to the Bulgarian top class of amateur boxers since 2001. In 2001 he was the first Bulgarian heavyweight champion with a victory over Ivan Atanasow. In 2001 he won one of the oldest European boxing tournaments, the Strandjata Cup in Plovdiv , in the light heavyweight division with a victory over his compatriot Emil Krastew.
The international career of Kubrat Pulew also began in 2001. He was used in the amateur world championships in Belfast in the heavyweight division. He won there over Mukhamet Adamow from Kazakhstan on points, but was defeated in the quarterfinals against Sultan Ibragimow from Russia and finished fifth.
In 2002 he won again at the Strandjata Cup. He managed a sensational victory in the heavyweight division over the Cuban master Odlanier Solís . He then met Ibragimow again at the subsequent chemistry cup tournament in Halle (Saale) , to which he again lost. Together with Steffen Kretschmann , Germany , he took third place there.
In 2003 Kubrat Pulew took part in the world championships in Bangkok . In the heavyweight division, he met in the first round on Odlanier Solís, who took revenge for the defeat at the Standjata tournament in 2002, beat Pulew on points and threw him out of the race.
In 2004 Kubrat Pulew won the heavyweight championship of the European Union in Madrid over Balint Turgony from Hungary , Dieter Roth from Germany and Vitalijus Subacius from Lithuania and thus won the title in his class. At the 2004 European Championships in Pula he managed a super heavyweight victory over the strong German Alexander Powernow , but a defeat in the round of 16 left him out and only came in ninth place. This place was not enough to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens . After the European Championships in Pula, he won the super heavyweight division at the Olympic qualification tournament in Gothenburg . He beat Andreas Gustafsson from Sweden , Vyacheslav Hlaskow from Ukraine and Alan Reynolds from Ireland . Despite this tournament victory, he was only a substitute in the super heavyweight division at the Olympic Games. But since no other boxer was canceled, he had to watch the Olympic boxing tournament in Athens.
The boxing year 2005 began very successfully for Kubrat Pulew, because he defeated the Russian champion Islam Timursiev clearly on points (26:15) at the Strandjata tournament in Plovdiv in the final and won this tournament again. At the chemistry cup in Halle he surprisingly lost to Sebastian Köber from Germany and thus only reached fifth place in the super heavyweight division in Halle. At the World Championships in Mianyang / China he defeated Steven Rucke from Australia and Alen Begmanović from Serbia prematurely and thus faced his old rival Odlanier Solís again in the semifinals . Solís won on points (25:11) and then became world champion. For Kubrat Pulew, however, a third place remained, which went hand in hand with winning a World Championship bronze medal.
2006 Kubrat Pulew won both the Strandjata tournament in Pleven and the chemical cup in Halle in the super heavyweight division. In Pleven he won the final without a fight over the injured Vyacheslav Hlaskov , while in Halle he had to defeat three top European boxers with Jaroslavas Jakšto from Lithuania , Vyacheslav Hlaskow and Magomed Abdulsalamow from Russia. He then won another medal at the 2006 European Championships in Plovdiv . After victories over Vyacheslav Hlaskow and Csaba Kurtusz from Hungary, he was defeated there in the semifinals against Islam Timursiev by breaking off in the second round and thus won an EM bronze medal.
In 2007, Kubrat Pulew beat the German top-class super heavyweight division at the Chemistry Cup in Halle with Boris Boshenko, Stefan Köber and Erkan Teper and won this tournament again. Before the World Championships in Chicago , he also took part in tournaments in Ústí nad Labem and Bucharest . In both tournaments he was unlucky, because in Ústí he had to give up injured in the semifinals against Daniel Beehan from Australia . In Bucharest he was injured in his victorious semi-final fight against Erkan Teper and, as a precaution, did not take part in the final fight against Razvan Cojanu from Romania.
At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , he won over Beka Lobschanidze from Georgia and Vladimir Prusa from the Czech Republic on points. In the last sixteen he lost to Roberto Cammarelle from Italy and only came in ninth place.
In 2008, Kubrat Pulew won the Strandjata super heavyweight tournament again. In the final he defeated Cuban champions Robert Alfonso clearly on points (20: 9). He then fought for the ticket to Beijing in Pescara at the first European qualification tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games . In Pescara he won over Stefan Köber from Germany, Raitis Ritenieks from Latvia and Jaroslavas Jaksto. He drove to the Olympic Games very confidently. In the first round he met the almost unknown young Colombian Oscar Rivas and surprisingly had to admit defeat on points (5:11).
In November 2008, Kubrat Pulew was finally able to triumph in a major international championship. At the European Championships in Liverpool , he won the title with four wins and clearly defeated Denis Sergejew from Russia on points in the final battle (9: 2). Already after this tournament he planned to switch to the professional camp, which was not possible because of his ongoing contract with the Bulgarian military.
Pulew took part in the 15th World Amateur Championships in Milan in September 2009 . He defeated the Albanian Nelson Hysa by breaking off in the third round and Yousef Abdelghani from Israel on points (8: 2). In the quarterfinals he was eliminated with a point defeat (6:12) against the reigning world and Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle.
