The Weser-Ems-Hallen are a hall complex that is used as an event and exhibition center. The complex includes the congress hall, the ballrooms, the exhibition hall, the small EWE ARENA and the large EWE ARENA.

The Weser-Ems-Hallen have belonged to the city of Oldenburg to 100 percent since January 1st, 1994. With a total area of approx. 16,000 m² and a total capacity of more than 23,000 visitors, the Weser-Ems-Hallen are the largest trade fair location in the Oldenburg area.

location

The Weser-Ems-Hallen are located in the Oldenburg district of Donnerschwee. They were built relatively close to the city center on an open space between the Deutsche Bahn premises at Oldenburg Central Station and Donnerschweer Strasse.

Planning and construction of the Weser-Ems-Halle (today "Congress Hall")

The first plans for a cattle auction hall in Oldenburg go back to 1938. Due to the Second World War , the plans could not be pursued. Planning was not resumed until 1951.

The original hall complex, consisting of the Weser-Ems-Halle, two other halls ( East Prussia and Silesia Hall , today Halls 2 + 4 ) as well as other outbuildings, etc. a. a restaurant, was built from 1953 to 1954. Since a cattle auction hall was originally planned, there was a demonstration ring for the cattle next to the hall complex . There was also a siding for cattle transport . The Weser-Ems-Halle was officially opened on September 11, 1954.

When the foundation stone was laid, 680,000 DM were estimated for the construction of the Weser-Ems-Halle  . By the mid-1960s, however, 4.15 million DM had already been built into the multi-purpose hall, including later extensions.

Extensions of the Weser-Ems-Halle (today "Kongresshalle")

After the completion of the Weser-Ems-Halle, it quickly became clear that the construction was not sufficient in terms of its use not only as a cattle auction hall, but also as a multi-purpose hall. In 1956 it was decided to build an extension, the small ballroom .

In 1975 the hall complex was expanded again with an extension. The upper ballrooms were created . In 1984 the interior area behind the actual Weser-Ems-Halle, which has been called the Congress Hall since 1987 , between the two adjoining halls was completely roofed over. The exhibition hall was created .

In 1994 the congress hall was completely renovated. A basement was added and a foyer was added. In addition, modern stage technology systems were installed. In 1996, the complex was expanded to include Halls 5 + 6 and has since been referred to as the Weser-Ems-Hallen (plural).

Sports park at the Weser-Ems-Hallen

In 1980 another hall was built on the open-air site next to the Weser-Ems-Halle, which was operated independently as a sports park. The hall was z. B. used as an ice rink in winter. The operation was not cost-covering in the long run, so that the hall was shut down again in the 1980s.

In 2000, the unused hall was taken over by the operating company of the Weser-Ems halls and incorporated into the overall concept of the multi-purpose halls as Hall 7 .

EWE Arena

From 2004 to 2005 a sports arena, the EWE Arena , was built right next to the Weser-Ems-Hallen and opened on June 11, 2005.

Even if the use for basketball ( EWE Baskets ) and handball ( handball women of VfL Oldenburg ) was in the foreground in the EWE Arena , it was and is designed as a multi-purpose hall. It can be used for other sporting events, concerts , exhibitions , trade fairs, etc.

In 2013 the EWE Arena was renamed the small EWE Arena, as a newly built event hall in the Weser-Ems-Hallen was named as the (large) EWE Arena.

Use of the Weser-Ems halls

The congress hall of the Weser-Ems-Hallen was originally planned as a cattle auction hall, but from the beginning it was also used for numerous other events such as trade fairs , sporting events, concerts, exhibitions, revues , congresses, theater and musicals , festivals, etc. a. utilized. One of the first major nationwide events was the FDP federal party conference in 1955 , which took place from March 26 to 27, 1955. Since October 2018, the Regional Court of Oldenburg has been conducting criminal proceedings against Niels Högel in the Weser-Ems-Hallen due to the large number of parties involved .

At the beginning of the 21st century, the city of Oldenburg examined the modernization of the hall complex. As a result, it was decided to build a new multifunctional hall and to demolish several old halls.

The new multifunctional hall - as the neighboring round sports arena EWE Arena is called (in the planning phase also Weser-Ems-Arena ) - extends over an area of 3000 m². It is about 130 meters long and 70 meters wide. The 1800 m² foyer is located on Berliner Platz next to the entrance to the small EWE Arena. Another foyer connects the multifunctional hall with the existing exhibition hall. This is 500 m².

Halls 5 and 6 behind the exhibition hall were removed and other buildings demolished for the new building. After the construction of the new hall, Hall 7 and Halls 2 and 4 adjoining the exhibition hall were also demolished. In a further construction phase, instead of Hall 2, which was then demolished, a foyer for the exhibition and congress hall will be created, to which an administration building will be attached.

The construction of the new multifunctional hall began in February 2012. The opening took place in April 2013. The subsequent demolition of the old halls and the new construction of the foyer of the exhibition and congress hall and the administration building should be completed by the end of 2013. All construction measures should cost around 33.9 million euros, the total volume of the project with outdoor area and parking facilities is 38.6 million euros.

Outdoor area at the Weser-Ems-Hallen

The Weser-Ems-Hallen were built in the west of a large outdoor area. The Oldenburg Kramermarkt has been taking place in the autumn since 1963 on the site, which is a good 225,000 m² . Furthermore, the area is used for various events. A flea market is regularly held here in the summer months, for which the Weser-Ems halls are used in the winter months. The area is also used as a parking space for coaches and P&R traffic .

Leisure and adventure park

Between the open-air site at the Weser-Ems halls and the Deutsche Bahn site there is an unused area of over 50  hectares . There are plans to use this area for a leisure and adventure park. Together with the Weser-Ems-Hallen, a center for sports and culture enthusiasts could be created.

In principle, it would be possible to use the site for B. through halls for trend sports ( skateboarding and inline skating , BMX , climbing ), but also adventure and theme parks . Original considerations to build a new youth hostel here have since been discarded. The new youth hostel for Oldenburg is currently being built on Straßburger Straße.
