The EWE Baskets are a basketball team from Oldenburg , which emerged in 2001 from the basketball department of the Oldenburger Turnerbund (OTB). Name sponsor is EWE AG , the fifth largest energy supply company in Germany. In the 2008/09 season of the Bundesliga basketball league , the EWE Baskets team won the German championship for the first time .

history

The large EWE Arena, since April 2013 the Baskets' new home ground

Basketball has been played at the OTB since 1954 , and in 1964 the men of the OTB became champions of the DBB's highest division , the Oberliga Nord (including teams from West Berlin). In 1966 the OTB was one of the twenty founding members of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), and in 1971 it was relegated from the BBL. This was followed by two first division participations, otherwise the club was always at the forefront in the second division. Baskets Oldenburg GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1998. In 2000, they rose again to the Bundesliga and established themselves as a constant participant in the playoffs.

Since the rise

The main round of the 2005/06 season ended in eighth place after losing nine of the last ten games of the season, in the playoffs the Baskets were eliminated 2: 3 against Alba Berlin , with the Baskets winning both home games in the EWE Arena .

The 2006/07 season ended the Oldenburg in ninth place and missed the playoffs. In the BBL-Pokal the quarter-finals against Bremerhaven ended . On May 13, 2007, EWE Baskets took their head coach Don Beck on leave, who had worked for them for five years and had a fundamental role in establishing the club in the top half of the table. On May 23, 2007, Predrag Krunić was hired, a new coach with experience in European basketball. In addition, with the exception of Daniel Strauch, the entire squad was replaced. Later, the contract with Krunic was prematurely extended to 2012.

The main round of the 2007/08 season ended the Baskets in fifth place. In the playoffs they were able to beat their rivals from Bamberg for the first time and won the quarter-finals with only one defeat. In the following semi-final series they were defeated by the eventual champions Alba Berlin with 1: 3, with one game being won in Berlin. This was the greatest success in the club's history to date.

The main round of the 2008/09 season ended Oldenburg in third place in the table. In the playoffs they beat Frankfurt 3-1 in the quarter-finals and Bamberg 3-0 in the semifinals. In the final the Oldenburg won 3-2 against Bonn and thus won the German championship . When they took part in the EuroChallenge for the first time , they were among the top 16 teams and twice beat the eventual winner, Virtus Bologna . By winning the German championship , they qualified for the first time for the Euroleague , the top division in Europe. The outstanding man of the 2009 championship troupe was the American Jason Gardner , who was named the best player of the 2008/09 Bundesliga season.

The EWE Baskets could not design the 2011/12 season as hoped. Despite a supposedly strong squad, the team was rarely able to meet expectations. In March 2012, after a defeat against Trier, the separation from coach Krunić followed. With Ralph Held, Krunić's previous assistant to his successor until the end of the season. But the hoped-for entry into the playoffs no longer succeeded.

Sebastian Machowski was introduced as the new head coach for the 2012/13 season . He had previously worked for the New York Phantoms Braunschweig . In his first year with the Oldenburg team, he was runner-up. Furthermore, the EWE Baskets Oldenburg reached the final of the European club competition EuroChallenge for the first time this season. The tournament was held in Izmir, Turkey. After a narrow defeat against the hosts in the semifinals, Oldenburg reached third place in the tournament. The 2012/13 season was thus the most successful season for the “Thunderbirds” on an international level. Nationally they were only more successful in the championship year 2009.

In 2013/2014, Oldenburg was eliminated in the BBL semi-finals against FC Bayern Munich with 2: 3, in 2014/2015 the quarter-finals against Alba Berlin ended (0: 3). In April 2015, the first cup win was achieved in the own hall with a 72:70 against Brose Baskets from Bamberg. At that time, Mladen Drijenčić was already the coach, who had taken over from his predecessor Sebastian Machowski.

In the 2016/17 season, Drijenčić led the Oldenburg team into the final series of the German championship, but in the end his team had no chance against Bamberg (0-3 wins). Lower Saxony completed the main round of the 2018/19 Bundesliga game year as runner-up. In the quarter-finals, Bonn was eliminated, in the semifinals the Drijenčić troops remained without a win in three encounters and were eliminated. Oldenburg's playmaker Will Cummings was named the best player of the Bundesliga season 18/19.

EWE Baskets Oldenburg emerged from the spin-off from the Oldenburger Turnerbund . In 1998 a new company was founded with Baskets Oldenburg GmbH & Co. KG. The shareholders were Hermann Schüller , Peter Wandscher and Gerold Lange . When EWE expanded its involvement with the Oldenburg first division club in 2001 , it was named sponsor and the team was renamed EWE Baskets Oldenburg. The team crest was changed accordingly. In spring 2009, EWE changed its company logo, which resulted in an adaptation of the team emblem (henceforth with a white background). In 2018, EWE Baskets presented a redesigned logo and a slight change in their colors.

Promotion of young talent and cooperation

Young talent is promoted at EWE Baskets under the EWE Baskets Juniors brand. Cooperation partners are the Oldenburger Turnerbund (OTB) and TSG Westerstede.

The EWE Baskets Juniors include the NBBL and JBBL teams as well as the ProB team, which is operated jointly with the Oldenburg TB.

The previous Regionalliga team succeeded in the 2011/12 season with a record of 20 wins from 22 games, the sovereign promotion to the Pro B. In the second season after promotion to the third-highest German division (2013/14), the championship succeeded in the ProB, but waived her right to promotion. The title was defended in the 2014/2015 season.
