Robin Smeulders (born June 19, 1987 in Münster ) is a former Dutch - German basketball player in the position of forward .

Life

Smeulders is the son of an Austrian and a Dutch citizen and has Dutch and Austrian citizenship. Smeulders, who lived in his home country of Germany before he went to college, has now received German citizenship . He graduated from high school in 2006 at the Hoffmann von Fallersleben School in Braunschweig .

From 2004 to 2006 he played in the 2nd basketball league for SG Braunschweig and was a regular there at the age of 18. He has already been appointed to the selection teams of the Dutch Basketball Federation several times. He was already in the extended group of U-18 juniors and has already taken part in several international tournaments and a junior European championship. His previous positions were: EBBC Hertogenbosch (NL), Vellmar.

On June 8, 2010, EWE Baskets Oldenburg announced that they would sign Smeulders for 2 years (plus option). His contract was extended by two years to 2015 in 2013. In June 2015 he signed another two-year contract with Lower Saxony. On June 27, 2016, Smeulders announced the end of his career. During the Bundesliga playoffs in the spring of 2016, he had to sit out due to a back injury, which led to the decision not to want to expose himself to the physical strains of professional sport in order not to risk any later health consequences. He came to a total of 189 Bundesliga games (all for Oldenburg).

Due to his height of 2.08 m and his jumping ability, he was also called " Flying Dutchman " during his career .
