The University of Portland (UP) is a Catholic university in Portland , Oregon . The college, which is closely related to the Congregation of the Holy Cross , was founded in 1901 and is now known nationwide, especially for its sports program. The university 's women's soccer team has won multiple NCAA Women's Soccer Championships .

history

Archbishop Alexander Christie founded the university in 1901, which at the time traded under the name Columbia University after the nearby Columbia River . The following year the Congregation of the Holy Cross took over the administration of the college. Raised to junior college in the 1920s , the institution opened its College of Arts and Sciences in 1925 , where its first bachelor's degrees were earned in 1929 . In the 1930s the college got its current name and expanded its research and teaching area when medicine and economics were added. In 1948 engineering was added. In 1967 the Congregation transferred the management of the institution to a committee.
