Conor Patrick Casey (born July 25, 1981 in Dover , New Hampshire ) is a retired American football player . The striker last played for the Columbus Crew in the top division of North American football, Major League Soccer (MLS).

Career

Youth and amateur football

Casey grew up in Denver , where he got his first footballing experience at South High School .

In 1999 the center forward went to the University of Portland , where he also studied philosophy for a few semesters and played for the local college team. His first season in college was named Soccer America's Freshman of the Year . In the second he scored 23 goals.

Club career

After playing for the USA at the 2000 Summer Olympics , he moved to Germany to join the Borussia Dortmund amateurs . Via Hannover 96 and Karlsruher SC , he came to 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2004 , whose promotion to the Bundesliga he had made possible a few days earlier with the winning goal for KSC in the game against their direct competitor Alemannia Aachen . Casey played 40 games for Mainz 05. He scored three goals.

In February 2007 he left the Bundesliga and moved to Toronto FC in the highest North American football league, the Major League Soccer . After two completed games for the Canadians , he was exchanged in return for Riley O'Neill of the Colorado Rapids. In the 2009 season he was the second top scorer in the regular season . In 2010 Casey won the MLS championship with the Colorado Rapids by beating FC Dallas in the MLS Cup 2-1 . He was also named the game's MVP . In 2013 he moved to the Philadelphia Union . He was selected in December 2012 by means of an MLS Re-Entry Draft .

After three seasons, Casey joined the Columbus Crew on January 26, 2016 . Casey ended his career there a year later.

National team

Casey made his debut on March 31, 2004 against Poland . In the match against Cuba in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2005 in July of the same year, he tore a cruciate ligament and had to pause until the beginning of March 2006.

In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he secured the national team's participation in the tournament in October 2009 with two goals in the decisive game against Honduras.

Before his first appearances in the United States A team, he played for the United States' U-20 team, with which he also took part in the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina and reached the round of 16.

Coaching career

Casey became an assistant coach for the Colorado Rapids on January 26, 2017. After Anthony Hudson's dismissal on May 1, 2019, he briefly managed the team's game operations as interim coach.
