The University of Portland (UP) is a Catholic university in Portland , Oregon . The college, which is closely related to the Congregation of the Holy Cross , was founded in 1901 and is now known nationwide, especially for its sports program. The university 's women's soccer team has won multiple NCAA Women's Soccer Championships .
history
Archbishop Alexander Christie founded the university in 1901, which at the time traded under the name Columbia University after the nearby Columbia River . The following year the Congregation of the Holy Cross took over the administration of the college. Raised to junior college in the 1920s , the institution opened its College of Arts and Sciences in 1925 , where its first bachelor's degrees were earned in 1929 . In the 1930s the college got its current name and expanded its research and teaching area when medicine and economics were added. In 1948 engineering was added. In 1967 the Congregation transferred the management of the institution to a committee.

Sports program
The sports program was shaped in particular by the former professional soccer player Clive Charles , who took over the management of the NCAA soccer program at the university in 1986. initially only responsible for the men's area, from 1989 he also headed the program for the women's teams. Under the name Portland Pilots , the team competed in the NCAA . In 2002 and 2005, the women's team won this competition.
