OSU is one of only 25 universities in the US, where the program "Nuclear Engineering" ( nuclear technology ) can be occupied. As such, the school has its own research reactor on the university campus.
The OSU Campus is home to the OSU Open Source Lab , a worldwide unique institute for the promotion of free software projects . The laboratory represents the technical backbone for many of the most important open source projects in the world, such as the Linux kernel or the projects of the Apache and Mozilla Foundations.
In addition, the OSU is a leader in the field of tsunami research . It has a large laboratory for researching water waves ("OH Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory"). The tsunami warning signs, which were designed at the OSU and have been in Oregon (also at risk of tsunami) on the Pacific coast for years, are now used as standard warning signs worldwide.
In Newport at Yaquina Bay is the Hatfield Marine Science Center , which was founded in 1965 oceanographic research institute and Aquarium OSU.
Sports
The OSU sports teams call themselves the Beavers (“beavers”). The university is a member of the Pacific-12 Conference . The Beavers have a sporting "enmity" with the teams from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon , who call themselves the Ducks . The annual football game between the two universities is popularly known as the Civil War Game . It takes place alternately in Eugene and Corvallis.
Oregon State University's football stadium is constantly expanding, largely with the help of main sponsor Reser's Fine Foods , an American food brand. Hence the stadium is called Reser Stadium .
Craig Robinson, the older brother of former American First Lady Michelle Obama , coached the OSU basketball team.
