The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is founded in 1965 Oceanographic Research Institute and Aquarium of the Oregon State University (OSU). On the approximately 0.20 km² site there are also branches of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (OSFW). The Hatfield Marine Science Center is named after the former Governor of Oregon and US Senator Mark Hatfield . It is located on the south bank of Yaquina Bay in Newport , Oregon on the west coast of the United States .

Institute

The institute is interdisciplinary and serves research and training in the marine field. A total of 14 buildings with lecture halls, laboratories, a library and administrative facilities belong to the campus . About 300 people are employed at the HMSC and the associated other authorities and institutes. Research and teaching are in the fields of marine biology and ecology , oceanography , botany , microbiology , zoology , geochemistry , genetics , fisheries science and aquaculture . Tanks and laboratories for sea water experiments are available to the researchers. Furthermore, one of 12 Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Stations (COMES) is affiliated with the institute. This station conducts research in the food and agricultural industries. NOAA plans to move its Marine Operations Center-Pacific to campus by 2011 and will then create another 50 to 100 additional jobs here.

Visitor center

A visitor center , which was also opened in 1965, is attached to the research center . There are aquariums and exhibitions on marine topics. A giant Pacific octopus can be seen in one of the aquariums , and there is also a tidal pool with flora and fauna from the Pacific coast. The exhibitions deal with weather phenomena, tsunamis , fishing, the extraction of raw materials from the sea and the seabed, as well as communities in the water column. Furthermore, the visitor center is a Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center which, together with 21 other centers in the USA and Mexico, offers information on maritime topics. With more than 150,000 visitors (2003), the HMSC visitor center is an important tourist attraction in the region. Admission is free; a voluntary donation to maintain and expand the exhibitions is requested. A small bookshop is attached to the visitor center, the proceeds of which are also used to maintain the exhibitions.

Outside you can find out about the environment and life forms in estuary on the approximately one kilometer long Yaquina Estuary Trail , an educational trail along Yaquina Bay. In the immediate vicinity is the Oregon Coast Aquarium and on the opposite side of the bay is the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse , also with a visitor center.

Research vessels

The research vessels R / V Wecoma , R / V Elakha and R / V Pacific Storm are affiliated with the HMSC and have their home port in Newport. The berth of the ships is on the pier directly in front of the institute. With the relocation of the NOAA Pacific operations center , the research fleet with its home port in Newport will be expanded by four more ships.
