Newport is a small town in Lincoln County in the US state of Oregon on the Pacific coast . The city, founded in 1882 , has 9532 inhabitants (2000) on an area of 27 km². Newport is the county seat of Lincoln County and lives mainly from tourism.
geography
The city is located at the mouth of the Yaquina River which flows into the Pacific Ocean at the southern end of Yaquina Bay . The historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is located here in Yaquina Bay State Park . About five kilometers north is the Yaquina Head peninsula on which the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is located. The most striking point of the city is the Yaquina Bay Bridge over the Yaquina River.

The place is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, a large aquazoo, and the Hatfield Marine Science Center, a marine research institute and aquarium belonging to Oregon State University .
