Jesse James' home in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he was shot by Robert Ford
  • April 3: Robert Ford shoots Jesse James from behind at his home in Missouri as he dusts off a picture. Immediately after the fact, Ford turned himself in to the authorities, who, to his surprise, arrested him and his brother for murder, charged them and sentenced them to death by hanging. However, the sentence is not carried out and Ford receives the pardon promised by Governor Thomas Theodore Crittenden before the crime and part of the bounty offered on Jesse James .
