Jesse James' home in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he was shot by Robert Ford
  • April 3 : Robert Ford shoots Jesse James from behind in his house in Missouri while he is dusting a picture. Immediately after the crime, Ford surrenders to the authorities, who, to his surprise, arrest him and his brother for murder, indict him and sentenced him to death by hanging. The verdict was not carried out, however, and Ford received the remission promised by Governor Thomas Theodore Crittenden prior to the offense and part of the bounty on Jesse James .
