- May 9: German Reich Patent Number 22244 protects the autotype invented by Georg Meisenbach . This printing process enables the reproduction of rasterized photos in the press.
- October 10: The Bank of Japan is established as a monopolistic central bank .
- 22 December: The Kurfürstendamm Society for the development of Kurfürstendamm and the Grunewald villa colony is founded. Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft , which will later merge to form BHF-Bank , and Deutsche Bank have a decisive stake in the company's capital of eight million marks .

- 6 February: Kaiser Wilhelm I travels the route of the new Berlin Stadtbahn in a special train . The next day the Stadtbahn will be officially opened for city traffic and on May 15th for long-distance traffic .
- 22 May: The Gotthard tunnel is officially opened and ten days later the Gotthard railway begins operations. The railway connection between Göschenen and Airolo greatly facilitates passenger and freight traffic between Switzerland and Italy.

- July 26: Richard Wagner 's last musico-dramatic work , the "Bühnenweihfestspiel" Parsifal , has its successful premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus . Conductor is Hermann Levi . The stage design is by Paul von Joukowsky .
- August 20: The premiere of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Overture 1812 takes place in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Despite its success, Tchaikovsky himself viewed the piece with skepticism and denied it any artistic value.
- November 25: The stage play Voyage à travers l'impossible by Jules Verne has its world premiere at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris . After 97 performances in Paris, the play is lost.
- 5 December: The composer Siegfried Ochs founds the Berlin Philharmonic Choir as a mixed choir under the name of Siegfried Ochs'scher singing association .
- December 6: The premiere of the operetta Der Bettelstudent by Karl Millöcker with the libretto by Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna . The piece from the golden operetta era becomes one of the most popular German-language operettas .

- April 3: Robert Ford shoots Jesse James from behind at his home in Missouri as he dusts off a picture. Immediately after the fact, Ford turned himself in to the authorities, who, to his surprise, arrested him and his brother for murder, charged them and sentenced them to death by hanging. However, the sentence is not carried out and Ford receives the pardon promised by Governor Thomas Theodore Crittenden before the crime and part of the bounty offered on Jesse James .
