Karl Ettlinger
Karl Ettlinger (pseudonyms: Karlchen, Helios, Bim; born January 22, 1882 in Frankfurt am Main , † May 29, 1939 in Berlin ) was a German journalist and humorous writer.
Life
Ettlinger was a son of the Jewish businessman Emil Ettlinger from Frankfurt and his wife Mathilde nee. Oppenheim . His older brother was the philosopher Max Ettlinger . From 1902 he regularly published poems in Frankfurt dialect in the then very popular weekly newspaper Die Jugend (see also: Art Nouveau ). As an ardent patriot , he went to the First World War and wrote Karlchen's war reports with a circulation of around 150,000 copies. Seriously wounded in 1916, he was discharged from military service after a long hospital stay. After the war, briefly managing editor of the youth , he worked from 1918 as a freelance writer . In 1927 he ended his collaboration with the magazine.
He wrote in German-language newspapers and magazines , worked for radio broadcasts and often appeared in cabarets . With Karlchen Evenings he was out and about in bathing resorts and larger cities in Germany. In 1933 when National Socialism came to power , he was banned from working for the first time. In 1939 he was finally banned from writing and was ordered to leave his place of residence in Egern am Tegernsee .
To prepare for his brother's departure to the USA, he traveled to Berlin via Frankfurt. There he had to undergo bile surgery and died of heart failure after the operation in a Jewish hospital. He is buried in Frankfurt.
plant
Ettlinger has published around 40 books and around 1,700 articles in the magazine Jugend , some of them in new editions.
