geography

Galați lies on the left bank of the lower Danube . A few kilometers upstream, the Sereth flows into the Danube. The border with the Republic of Moldova is about 11 km northeast of the city .

history

Settlements already existed on the territory of today's city during the Dacian and Roman times . Galați was first mentioned in a document in 1445 . In the further course, the city developed into an important trading center, primarily due to its Danube port.

In the 17th century Galați was called the most important city in the Principality of Moldova after Iași . At that time, around 3,000 people lived in 300 houses in the city.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the city was affected several times by fighting in the course of the Russo-Turkish wars as well as by epidemics . In the 19th century, its importance as a trading town increased, as Galați no longer bordered only on the Principality of Wallachia and the Ottoman Empire , but also on the Russian Empire . After the First World War , during which Galați was temporarily occupied by German troops, industrial development intensified.

Bessarabian German treks in Galatz

The treks of the Bessarabian German resettlers to Romania came via Galatz in 1940 .

economy

Look at Galați

Today the city is characterized by heavy industry such as the largest ironworks in Romania, mechanical engineering and the largest Romanian shipyard. It also has a textile factory, mills, sawmills and fishing operations. A polytechnical institute was founded in 1948 and has had university status since 1974.

traffic

Galați is particularly important for its port, which is considered the most important inland port in the country. It is used as a naval port and is the last transshipment point before the Danube Delta. There is a regular ferry service to the right bank of the Danube to IC Brătianu . The associated railway complex includes the Galați passenger station and the Barboși marshalling yard near the village of Movileni. The city has had a connection to the railway network since the beginning of the 1870s. Local and express trains to Bucharest and Tecuci run regularly from the passenger station . The broad gauge tracks to Reni in Ukraine were only used for freight traffic in 2009. Galați is one of the few Romanian cities in which buses, trolley buses and the Galați tram are used in local public transport . The European route 87 leads through Galați .
