Piatra Neamț [ ˈpjatra ne̯amt͜s ] (literally "Deutschstein", Hungarian Karácsonkő ) is the capital of the Neamț district in Romania .
Geographical location
Piatra Neamţ is located in the historical region West of Moldova , on the terraces of the left bank of the Bistriţa (Bistritz) surrounded by foothills of the Eastern Carpathians , the mountains Pietricica, Cozla, Cernegura and Batca Doamnei to the national roads Drum naţional 15 , 15C and 15D .
history
The oldest traces of a settlement in the current urban area at Poiana Cireșului ("cherry meadow") point to the Mesolithic Age - around 12,000 BC.
The city was founded at the end of the 14th century as Piatra lui Crăciun . After the establishment of a royal court by nachtefan cel Mare , Prince of the Moldau (1433–1504), it developed into a famous arts and crafts center. The nearby town of Târgu Neamț was the center of a German-speaking settler colony in the Middle Ages, hence the name (Neamț = German).
