Villerest is a French municipality with 4902 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Villerest belongs to the Arrondissement of Roanne and the Canton of Roanne-2 .
geography
Villerest is located about 65 km west-northwest of Lyon on the Loire , which forms the Lac de Villerest here, a few kilometers southwest of Roanne . Villerest is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Riorges in the north, Roanne in the northeast, Commelle-Vernay in the east, Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire in the south and southwest, Lentigny in the west and Ouches in the northwest.
Villerest is located in the Côte Roannaise wine region .
history
Villerest was already a settlement in the Iron Age. However, it gained importance as an important place of the Gallic tribe of the Segusiaves. With the establishment of a Benedictine abbey in 910, the place then also became important from a clerical point of view.
