location
Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire is located ten kilometers southwest of Roanne directly on the Loire , which is dammed here over a length of 36 km to the Lac de Villerest . The municipal area extends on both banks of the Loire.
geology
The municipality is located in a location with anthracite-bearing layers from the late Viséum (340 million years ago), which were formed as a result of volcanic tectonic activities in the Dinantium (370-330 million years ago) on the Loire.
The prominent rocks in the vicinity of Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire are partly anthracite-containing tuffs, including the brick-red rhyolite rocks at Saint-Jean-le-Puy and blue and gray tuffs at Saint-Maurice-sur -Loire. There are also lava rocks nearby. These rocks show that as part of a volcanic sedimentary basin, the region exhibited strong igneous activity during the Variscan Paleozoic , during which the rocks became enriched with organic matter.
history
Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire was created in 1974 through the union of the immediately adjacent towns of Saint-Jean-le-Puy and Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire.
