Balbigny is a French commune with 2,965 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located roughly on the line connecting Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand on the right bank of the Loire . It is located at the Nervieux-Balbigny motorway junction , where the A89 motorway in the direction of Lyon branches off from the French A72 motorway (connection between Clermont-Ferrand and St-Etienne). As early as 1832 , a horse-drawn railway line ran from Andrézieux to Roanne through the municipality.
