Saint-Symphorien-de-Lay is about 14 kilometers southeast of Roanne am Gand . In the north the river Rhins borders the community. Saint-Symphorien-de-Lay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Régny in the north, Lay in the north and northeast, Fourneaux in the east, Croizet-sur-Gand in the south, Neulise in the southwest and Neaux in the west.
The National Route 7 runs through the municipality .
