Violay is a French commune with 1,239 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located about 10 km southwest of the small town of Tarare (Rhône) on the line connecting Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand . The highest point in the municipality is Mont Boussièvres at 1004 m and the Tour Matagrin observation tower, which was built there in 1876 (open from June to September). In the Vallée de La Truche there is a small museum about the excavations from prehistoric times in the caves located there.
