history
At the beginning of the 12th century, the Savigny monastery founded the parish of Tarare. Until the French Revolution the inhabitants, mostly craftsmen, traders or owners of hostels, were under ecclesiastical rule. In the second half of the 18th century, Georges Antoine Simonet shaped the future development of Tarare with the introduction of the muslin fabric. A century later, Jean Baptiste Martin founded a factory for the production of plush and velvet fabrics . The two rivers Turdine and Taret favor the flourishing of the textile industry . In 1866 the population exceeded 15,000. In addition, the railway viaduct on the Roanne - Lyon route and various municipal facilities were built. Another milestone was the construction of the Barrage de Joux dam (municipality of Joux) between 1901 and 1904. In 1933 the hospital was relocated from the city center and expanded. During the Second World War , on August 22, 1944, ten civilians were murdered by German soldiers a few days before the city was liberated. In the 1950s, the dam wall was enlarged to accommodate the growing industry. However, the textile industry has been experiencing a decline since the 1970s.
