Chasselay is a commune with 2,784 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Administratively it belongs to the arrondissement Villefranche-sur-Saône and is part of the canton of Anse . The inhabitants are called Chasselois (es) .
geography
Chasselay is located on the Mont d'Or range of hills , in the Coteaux du Lyonnais wine-growing region , about 13 kilometers north-northwest of Lyon . Chasselay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Les Chères in the north and north-west, Quincieux in the north, Saint-Germain-au-Mont-d'Or in the east, Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or in the south and south-east, Limonest in the south and Lissieu in the West.
history
On June 19 and 20, 1940, Senegalese troops ( Tirailleurs sénégalais ) managed to resist the advancing German troops and to hold Chasselay in the battle for the Rhone Valley longer. The units of the Greater Germany Division and the SS Totenkopf Division then committed a massacre of the troops and their officers.
