Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes [ ovɛʁɲ ʁon alp ] ( German Auvergne-Rhone-Alps ) is a French region that was created on January 1, 2016 from the merger of the previous regions of Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes . The name is formed from the alphabetical order of the merged regions and was initially given as a provisional name. Following a decision by the regional council, it was confirmed as the final name by the Conseil d'État on October 1, 2016 .
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the third largest region with 69,711 km² (excluding overseas regions) and has 7,948,287 inhabitants (as of 2017), which makes it the second largest region in terms of population after the Île-de-France . It is divided into the 13 departments Ain , Allier , Ardèche , Cantal , Drôme , Haute-Loire , Haute-Savoie , Isère , Loire , Metropole Lyon , Puy-de-Dôme , Rhône and Savoie . It borders (clockwise) on the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region , Switzerland , Italy and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , Occitania , Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Center-Val de Loire regions .
The administrative center of the region is Lyon . President is Laurent Wauquiez.

Result of the election of the regional council on December 13, 2015:
- List Laurent Wauquiez (Union de la Droite from LR , UDI and MoDem ): 40.61% = 1,201,528 votes, 113 seats
- List Jean-Jack Queyranne (Union de la Gauche from PS , PRG , EELV and FG ): 36.84% = 1 089 791 votes, 57 seats
- List Christophe Boudot ( FN ): 22.55% = 667,084 votes, 34 seats
