Relief map of the Occitania region (administrative region) |
Occitania , that (French L'Occitanie , Occitan Occitània [utsitanjɔ], Catalan Occitània [uksitanjə]) is the name of the French region that on 1 January 2016 through the merger of the regions Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrenees arose. The name creates a reference to Occitania , which, however, as a traditional language area of the Occitan language, extends beyond the boundaries of today's administrative region. Members of the Catalan ethnic group also live in the south .
Naming
In a non-binding referendum from May 9 to June 10, 2016, the region name Occitanie prevailed by a large margin , with 44.9% of the votes cast. The Languedoc-Pyrénées proposal came in second place with 17.9% and Pyrénées-Méditerranée came third with 15.3% . Occitanie-Pays Catalan received 12.1%, followed by Languedoc in fifth place with 10% of the vote . On June 24, 2016, the regional council voted with broad approval for the name Occitanie with the subtitle Pyrénées-Méditerranée and the immediate use of the new name. Formally, however, the new name had to be put into effect by the French Council of State .
