The Hautes-Pyrénées department is the French department with ordinal number 65. It is located in the south of the country on the Spanish border in the Occitania region north of the main Pyrenees ridge .

geography

The Hautes-Pyrénées department is surrounded clockwise by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques , Gers and Haute-Garonne departments . In the south, the main ridge of the Pyrenees forms the state border with the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain . The most important river is the Adour .

history

The department was formed on March 4, 1790 mainly from the Gascognischen county Bigorre , which was expanded to the north and east, mainly by parts of the county Armagnac , the county Comminges and the vice-county Nébouzan .

From 1960 to 2015 it belonged to the Midi-Pyrénées region , which in 2016 became part of the newly created region of Occitania.
